Hey fellow authors!
If you’re anything like me, you know that marketing your book can be pretty expensive. But here’s the good news: You don’t have to spend a fortune to get your book out there. There are actually a ton of free or low-cost events you can participate in to help promote your book—and libraries are some of the best places to start. Trust me, I’ve been there!
In fact, I’m about to do a book signing at my local Tomball Library on June 21st from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. (Yes, you’re invited!) Libraries love supporting local authors, and what I love most is that I don’t have to pay a thing for the event. It’s just a great way to connect with readers in my community.
But before you go and book your own event, let’s talk about how you can find these gems—and why they’re so worth it.
Why Libraries Are Awesome for Author Events
I’ve worked with libraries a few times now, and I can say they’re definitely worth checking out. Here’s why:
Libraries are all about supporting their communities. Most have programs specifically for local authors, whether it’s for a book signing, reading, or even a workshop. And guess what? These events are often free or super affordable.
Libraries already have an audience. People love going to libraries. They’re gathering places for readers, educators, families, and more. If your book is for kids or young readers, libraries are an especially great fit.
It’s a low-cost, high-reward situation. I’m a big believer in doing what works for your budget, and libraries make that easy. They provide the space (for free or at a low cost), and all you need to do is show up with your books and some good energy.
A Quick Example: My Book Signing at Tomball Library
So, here’s a real example from me: I’m hosting a book signing at the Tomball Library in a few weeks, and I can’t wait! The event is totally free for me to organize, and I’m excited to meet readers in my community. I’ll be chatting about my Adventures in Oculus series and signing books for anyone who’s interested.
If you’re an author, library events are one of the easiest (and least expensive) ways to get started. All it took was a quick email to the library’s events coordinator, and now it’s happening!

Where to Find Free or Low-Cost Author Events
So, you might be wondering, how can you find similar events to promote your book? Here are a few ideas:
Start with your local library. Libraries are usually eager to host local authors for book signings, readings, or workshops. They often have special programs dedicated to supporting authors, and the best part? It’s usually free or very affordable.
Check out indie bookstores. Indie bookstores are wonderful places to connect with readers, and many of them host book signings, author meet-and-greets, or even workshops. Often, they let authors sell their books in-store, which can give you a chance to introduce your work to a new audience.
Network with local writing groups. If you’re part of any writing groups, online or in person, ask around! These groups are usually great at knowing about upcoming low-cost author events, book fairs, or even workshops where you can promote your work.
Participate in community fairs or markets. These events, like farmers markets, art fairs, or local festivals, are excellent for getting your book out there. Sometimes, you just have to pay for a table, and you’re ready to meet a whole new audience of potential readers.
Host your own event! If you’ve got the time and space, you can always host your own book event. It could be at a local café, community center, or even online. The more personal the event, the better!
My Tip for Library Events
Here’s a little tip from me: If you’re doing a library event, be sure to bring some promotional materials with you. Things like bookmarks, flyers, and a sign-up sheet for your newsletter are a great way to keep readers connected to you. While you might not always be able to sell books directly at the library, this will help people know where to find your work and how to stay in touch.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Break the Bank to Promote Your Book
Promoting your book doesn’t have to break the bank. Libraries and other community events are fantastic ways to get started—especially if you’re working with a smaller budget. It’s all about finding the right opportunities that align with your goals, and libraries are a great place to begin.
If you’ve done any library events or community book signings, I’d love to hear about your experiences. Drop a comment or shoot me a message. Let’s share some ideas and support one another in this creative journey!
