Writing stories that truly matter means more than just entertaining readers. When I created Adventures in Oculus I wanted to do something deeper, crafting a middle grade fantasy series that blends adventure with hope and heart where the richness of Catholic faith gently guides the journey without overwhelming the story.
At its core Adventures in Oculus begins with Dominic’s Closet where a boy discovers a hidden portal to a shadowed world. Oculus is filled with magic and mystery but also challenges Dominic’s courage, friendship, and faith. Through his adventures readers explore the timeless battle between light and darkness, a theme deeply rooted in Catholic spirituality that reminds us of Christ as the Light who conquers all darkness.
The story’s magic is not just in fantastical elements but in the wisdom woven into the narrative. Dominic carries a magical Book of Knowledge that symbolizes the pursuit of divine wisdom and truth, echoing Catholic teachings about seeking God’s guidance through prayer, Scripture, and discernment. The friendships he forms mirror Christ’s call to love sacrificially and serve others selflessly. Most importantly, the world of Oculus becomes a place where brokenness meets healing and redemption, reflecting the Catholic belief in God’s grace and the power of transformation.
This story is deeply personal to me because it reflects my own journey through loss and hardship. When my children were little I lost my mother to cancer, a loss that shook my world. Before their birth, I endured very difficult pregnancies with severe hyperemesis gravidarum that left me physically and emotionally drained. These challenges tested my faith and resilience in ways I could not have imagined. Yet through those trials, I felt like a phoenix rising from the ashes, renewed by God’s grace and strengthened by His love.
Like Dominic, I have walked through darkness and found light. Writing this series has been both a source of healing and a way to offer hope to young readers facing their own battles. It is a reminder that no matter how overwhelming life’s storms may be, God’s love can restore and transform us.
For emerging authors who want to include their faith in their writing my experience shows that subtlety and authenticity are essential. Catholic themes do not need to be overt to be powerful. Faith can live naturally in character choices, story arcs, and themes without ever feeling preachy. A clear theme, whether it is hope, courage, or redemption, grounds the story while empathy and honesty allow readers to connect deeply. This balance invites reflection while leaving space for imagination and wonder.
Adventures in Oculus is designed for middle grade readers who seek adventure with meaning. It resonates with parents, educators, and Catholic families wanting stories where faith and values are gently woven into the narrative. It also serves as a model for writers aspiring to create purpose-driven stories that both entertain and uplift.
The second book, Firedrake, expands the world of Oculus and explores themes of identity and leadership through the lens of faith and grace. I am honored that Firedrake is currently in the running for a Nebula Award and I look forward to sharing a special announcement about Dominic’s Closet this September.
